What we collect, and what we don't
WingsAbove is designed to know as little about you as possible while still showing the planes near you. This page is in plain language on purpose — if anything here is unclear, email hello@wings-above.com and we'll explain it.
What the device uses
- Your approximate location. To show "what's flying overhead," the device needs a rough location. You enter an airport code or a US ZIP code; it's converted to an approximate latitude/longitude and stored on the device. That coarse location is sent to the WingsAbove backend to fetch nearby flights, and is used for nothing else.
- Wi-Fi credentials are stored on the device only, so it can reconnect. They are never sent to us.
What we don't do
- No accounts, no personal profile. Setup asks for Wi-Fi and a location — not your name, email, or address.
- We don't sell your data. Your location is never sold or shared for advertising.
- No microphone, no camera. The device doesn't listen and doesn't watch.
- No keys on the device. All data-provider API keys live only on our backend, never on the device or the SD card.
The backend
The device talks only to the WingsAbove backend, which fetches public flight data and images from licensed providers on your behalf. The backend may keep short-lived, coarse request logs (for example area and time) in order to operate and cache efficiently. It does not build a personal profile of you.
The website
This website works differently from the device, and it's worth stating plainly.
- Waitlist signups. The form stores your email address, the ad or link that sent you, your IP address, and your browser's user-agent, with our forms host (Netlify) and our email sender (Buttondown). We use it to email you about WingsAbove — launch, pre-orders, and updates. We don't sell it or pass it to anyone else, and every email includes an unsubscribe link.
- Meta Pixel (advertising). This site runs Meta's advertising pixel, which tells Meta (Facebook and Instagram) that a visit and a signup happened, so we can measure which ads work and reach people likely to be interested. Meta receives this as an advertising partner and handles it under their data policy. We do not send your email address to Meta. You can limit this in your Facebook or Instagram ad settings, or by using a browser that blocks trackers.
- TikTok Pixel (advertising). This site also runs TikTok's advertising pixel, which tells TikTok that a visit and a signup happened, for the same reason: measuring which ads work. TikTok receives this as an advertising partner and handles it under their privacy policy. We do not send your email address to TikTok. You can limit this in your TikTok ad settings, or by using a browser that blocks trackers.
- The device is not involved. The pixels are on this marketing website only. Nothing on the device reports to Meta, TikTok, or any advertising network.
Screen Cast and optional features
Screen Cast streams your display over your local Wi-Fi only, and is off by default. While it's on, anyone on your network who has the address can view it. A future "watch from anywhere" option would route through our servers and would be clearly opt-in.
Your choices
- Change or clear your location at any time (Menu → Set Location).
- Factory Reset (Menu) erases your Wi-Fi, location, and settings from the device.
- Unsubscribe from any email using the link in its footer, or email us and we'll remove you by hand.
- Ask us what we hold about you, or ask us to delete it, at hello@wings-above.com.
